CHANGING FACES COINS
Only twice in U.S. history has the face of a regular-issue coin changed while keeping the portrait of the same person: the Washington Quarter and Jefferson Nickel. The regular Washington Quarter was made until 1998; it was replaced with the State Quarters series in 1999. In order to accommodate the unique state design on the reverse, the portrait on the obverse was made smaller and United States of America and Quarter Dollar from the reverse were added to the obverse.
